Where To Buy Rocks To Paint is one of the most frequent questions I get in my Facebook group. Not everyone is blessed with having flat stones available close to where they live.
“All the lessons are in nature. You look at the way rocks are formed – the wind and the water hitting them, shaping them, making them what they are. Things take time, you know?” – Diane Lane
You want smooth round or oval stones, but you want to make sure the ones you buy don’t have a wax coating on them. If they do, you will have to boil it off or scrub it, and that’s no fun!

Here are the best suggestions of Where to Get Rocks to Paint:
1) Landscaping company.
Rocks can be pretty inexpensive at these businesses. Most of the time you even get to pick out your rocks, so you never end up with ones you wouldn’t use.
Wear appropriate clothing, because sorting through dirty rocks can be a messy job!
Stone Companies for Finding Rocks to Paint
Believe it or not, there are businesses that just sell stones. Most of the time you also get to choose your rocks. Again, make sure you wear clothing you’re okay with getting dirty and bring a pair of garden gloves.
Buy Rocks to Paint in Home improvement stores
Home Depot and Lowe’s are just two of the stores that carry landscape rocks. You’ll find them in the garden section. This can be a seasonal item, depending on where you live so stock up before winter hits.
The rocks come in prepackaged bags.
Garden centers
While you’re looking for stones, you might as well pick up a few stones too. They also have landscape rocks, and they will come prepackaged.
Best Craft Stores for Buying Rocks
Now even craft stores have caught on to how much people love to paint rocks! You can go to your nearest Hobby Lobby or Michaels to pick some up. Make sure you bring your coupons with you so you get an even bigger discount.
Where to Buy Rocks Online
You can buy rocks from Amazon. Make sure you pick the bags that come with free shipping. You can find some rocks here.
Once you get your rocks, make sure you clean them before painting. Paint doesn’t adhere as well to rocks that have dirt on them.
Finding Rocks in Nature for Rock Painting
Now keep in mind, it can be illegal to pick up stones in parks or natural settings. With how popular rock painting has become if everyone took buckets and buckets of rocks from waterways can harm the environment.
Definitely don’t take rocks from National Parks or railroad tracks, it’s illegal.
What to Do With Those Unusual Shaped Rocks?
1) You can do a rock pour on them. That’s all the rage right now, and it makes any shaped rock beautiful.
2) Let the rock speak to you. Some people look for unusual-shaped rocks because they want the stone to dictate what it should be. You can also post the rock in our Facebook group and let the “rockers” help you out with an idea.
How to Clean Rocks:
1) Buy a small plastic tub and use this to clean your rocks.
2) Use dish soap and hot water to clean off the dirt. Don’t soak them, because water will seep into the rocks and they will take longer to dry.
3) Use a dish scrub brush to get it really clean.
4) Rise with clean water.
5) Air dry.
DO NOT use your dishwasher to clean the rocks. The sediment will stick in drains and pipes.
